What are the chances of a 19 mo old dog who has all shots getting Parvo?
We took him to the vet today and he said he didn't think he had it but he didn't test for it. He has all the signs he's throwing up several times an hour, his poop is either bloody or a yellow liquid, and he's in horrible pain.
The vet gave us meds and told us to make sure to give them to him but he won't keep them down, he throws them up like 5 minutes after taking them. He also gave him a Hyathal shot. Would that make him throw up? Because he wasn't doing that before the shot.
I'm just so worried, he's our baby so we take such good care of him. I just feel so useless watching him suffer like this. What else besides Parvo could it be since the vet had no answers? And could he even get it since he's almost 2 and up to date on all his shots?
Couple of questions for you and perhaps to call and ask.
Did he do a fecal as whips/hooks can cause the bloody nasty stool and make a very sick dog? Did he explain what he thought was wrong and what the meds are for? Have you called back per the increased vomiting??
Yes, we have run into older dogs with years of vetting suddenly die. Autopsy revealed Parvo??! This hit bad in this area for awhile. Was not in isolated community either, in area of State. Obviously there are some strains mutating!!OMG. All happened after weeks of heavy thunderstorms--disease spread thru groundwaters?
I strongly urge a call back to vet if he is your regular vet and you trust. If not, seek a second opinion and insist on fecal/bloodwork. Keep the dog hydrated if at all possible. If can not keep down fluids then run-don't walk- to the vet. Do not leave without answers or the dog as IV fluids will be needed by now.
