The Body Mass Index scale (BMI) is a statistical assessment used to approximate a healthy body weight according to a person's height. It is the most widely used diagnostic tool to classify weight problems within the population, because of the easiness of measurement and calculation, whether individuals are underweight, overweight, or obese. It does not, however, actually measure a person's percentage of body fat.

BMI is also known as the Quetelet index, after the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet who invented the method between 1830 and 1850 during the course of developing "social physics". Body mass index is defined as the individual's body weight divided by the square of his or her height. Using the metric system, the formula will be BMI = weight (kg)/ height (cm) X height (cm). Using the English system the formula will be BMI = weight (lbs) X 703/ height (in) X height (in); or BMI = weight (lbs) X 4.88/ height (ft) X height (ft).

While the formula for BMI dates back to the 19th century, the term "body mass index" dates to a 1972 paper by Ancel Keys, which found the BMI to be the best alternative for body fat percentage among ratios of weight and height. Keys, however, explicitly cited that it is only appropriate for use in population studies and inappropriate for individual diagnosis. Because of its simplicity, it became widely used for individual diagnosis, despite not being appropriate.

This has been used by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the standard for recording obesity statistics since the early 1980s. In the U.S., This is also used as a measure of underweight, owing to the advocacy against anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa. This can be calculated quickly and without expensive equipment though BMI categories do not take into account many factors such as frame size and muscularity as well as the varying proportions of fat, bone, cartilage, water weight, and others.

For this reason, the is used in conjunction with other methods such body fat percentage, waist to hip ratio (WHR) and others, in determining the ideal weight.
