Panic disorder is mental condition wherein the person often fears and anticipates another panic attack to happen anytime, anywhere. They also worry that they might have other disorders such as heart, lungs or brain ailments. They are so affected by these worries that they often go to the emergency facilities to be admitted for care, or they do frequent visits with their physicians for fear that they are about to die. Anxiety disorders need to be treated as soon as possible, so a person can manage it and recover. So how does a person know the severity of his panic disorder?
The occurrences of these attacks are hardly ever predictable, but with the panic disorder severity scale, the psychotherapist can measure the over-all severity of this disorder. The instrument is intended to assess the severity of the panic disorder case and can correctly monitor the outcome of the treatments performed for a patient.
The panic disorder severity scale is a very simple method and the therapist can administer it in 5-10 minutes. It uses a scripted interview with 7 items to accurately gauge the level of disorder. These 7 items aim to determine panic frequency, distress during panic, panic-focused anticipatory anxiety, phobic avoidance of situations phobic avoidance of physical situations impairment in work functioning, and impairment in social functioning. These items are rated from 0-4 scale.
The person administering the panic disorder severity scale should have the proper clinical training to properly give his personal interpretation of the scale. It is not a diagnostic instrument and should not therefore be used as a screening method for patients.
Accurate interpretation of the results of the panic disorder severity scale is very crucial as it will determine the kind and level of treatment applied to every individual, what therapies are appropriate, and what measures are to be taken in order to successfully help the patient to full recovery.
