Siberian Ginseng
Eleutherococcus senticosus (Acanthopanax senticosus Syn.) is in the same botanical family as Panax ginseng (Araliaceae), but is not a member of the genus Panax and is not considered a true ginseng. E. senticosus, also known to as Eleuthero, commonly known as Siberian ginseng or Russian is native to eastern Russia. The root or root bark is used medicine.
Uses and Benefits:
Siberian ginseng States that have powerful adaptogenic properties and tonic that can modulate stress and improve physical and mental performance in a wide variety of stress conditions. It was discovered by scientists Soviet seeking an alternative to Asian ginseng and other adaptogenic herbs. Officially approved for use in Russia in 1962, ginseng Siberia has become a popular beverage company to help improve endurance. In traditional Chinese medicine, this plant is considered as a tonic minor (called Ci Wu Jia). It has been used for bronchitis, digestion, heart disease, rheumatism, headaches and insomnia, and restore the overall strength and health.
Pharmacology:
Eleuthero (GA) are considered most important elements in the roots of Siberian ginseng. Unlike ginsenosides Panax genus, however, are a diverse group eleutherosides Chemical Plant (Iignans, sterols, phenylpropanoids, coumarins, and others), and are not unique to E. senticosus. Soviet researchers conducted numerous experiments with animals, Siberian ginseng, and reported greater physical strength and resistance to infection, radiation, cancer, toxins, and the variety of extreme environmental conditions ii. Anabolic steroids, estrogens, anliviral, hypotension, and many other effects have also been demonstrated in animal models. Conflicting reports in which extracts from two hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia induced in animals, or increased sedation and stimulation of the central nervous system are explained by "adaptogenic" properties plant. Alternatively, extracts can be explained by different conditions or experiments. Most studies on resistance of animals before being blinded, which also raises the question of investigator bias, a blinded study later was negative.
The drug limited data available in humans. The reports, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 10 ml three times daily from a German product for 4 weeks significantly increased by 50% lymphocytes in 36 healthy volunteers. In a 25-blind, randomized, controlled, drops three times daily from a root extract ethanol decreased glucose and cholesterol (total, LOL, and triglycerides) and activity Increased neutrophils and lymphocytes in 50 healthy volunteers.
Clinical Trials:
Most early clinical trials in Russia were reviewed and summarized. Initial investigations said the athletes best results, athletes have more strength and concentration, and workers had fewer sick days when taking Siberian ginseng. In many studies involving more than 2,100 normal subjects, ginseng Siberia is reported to demonstrate the effects adaptogens to help people withstand several adverse conditions and stressors (workload, noise, motion, heat, etc.), performance is better at work. Studies in more than 2,200 patients have reported healthy "benefits" of various diseases such as atherosclerosis and heart disease, acute pyelonephritis, diabetes, chronic bronchitis, hypertension and hypotension, trauma, neurosis, and cancer. However, actual results and clinical benefits are not well defined. In addition, these studies have been or uncontrolled open-label, and do not meet current standards of clinical research of high quality.
In more recent controlled trials, benefits to endurance sports was reported in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, and improvements in muscle strength showed in a placebo-controlled trial with blinding light. A Chinese study also reported higher energy costs anaerobic threshold emd decreased respiratory quotient (suggesting greater fat metabolism "ism during exercise). However, more rigorous studies in two blind studies have failed verify these potential benefits. A series of small treadmill or cycle ergometer ergonomic controlled trials have found no advantage for a brand called Endurox Siberian Ginseng. Another well-designed trials of 20 runners did not find the ergonomic benefits with a Band eleutherosides ethanol extract administered E per day for 6 weeks compared to placebo. A well-designed, double-blind crossover study, found no measurable ergonomic benefits nine or metabolic cyclists, randomly assigned to receive placebo or 1,200 mg of Siberian ginseng per day for 7 days before two separate bicycle stress testing.
Adverse events:
Siberian ginseng is considered as safe and nontoxic, although data are limited. No side effects have been observed in recent human trials, and no reports of well documented cases of adverse effects. In the original Russian studies, side effects were not reported in healthy subjects, but it was suggested that Siberian ginseng should not be used when blood pressure above 180/90. In "unhealthy" patients, the reactions of insomnia, arrhythmias, hypertension, headaches, irritability and anxiety were reported from time to time. Caution is advising patients with heart disease, hypertension, psychiatric disease stimulants, or if you use caffeine or others, even if these side effects are not well established.
Side effects and interactions:
In two separate cases, adulterated or misbranded Eleutherococcus preparations (probably with Gliricidia Periploca, which contains glycosides cardioactive) were associated with androgenization in a newborn and a level of digoxin toxicity increased absent. Security Siberian Ginseng is unknown in women who are pregnant or nursing.
Preparations and doses:
Several products are available on the market American Herbal preparations of a variety of solids. In the initial studies of Russia, the doses were generally Supported 4-8 weeks at a time, interrupted by intervals of two to three weeks without ginseng, however, no data to support these plans. common dose of encapsulated extracts on the market today ranging from one to three capsules of 100 to 400 mg administered 2-3 times per day, roughly equivalent to 1-4 g / day or more a product of dried roots.
Summary Rating:
Siberian Ginseng is often used as an adaptogen to help modulate the response to stressors and increase mental and physical strength and endurance. These statements are based on animal studies and early clinical investigations by Soviet scientists. Siberian ginseng does not improve endurance based on the latest and best designed clinical trials. Limited studies suggest that Siberian ginseng can improve business WBC, lower cholesterol and patients with glucose, improve memory, and benefit from herpes simplex infections, but these studies require confirmation and, in general, the effectiveness of Siberian ginseng is not established beyond reasonable doubt for any indication. Based on limited data, Siberian ginseng appears to be safe, without side effects documented.
