what keeps a rocket stabilized during lift off?
If a rocket has a really low centre of gravity, how does it remain stable while taking off?
Large modern rockets use gimballed engines. This is where the rockets pivot about to direct the thrust and in essence steer the rocket. This system uses gyro or inertial navigational instruments to control the directional thrust.
Small rockets may still use fins for stabilization, depending on their intended use.
Large rockets would have a significantly higher proportion of the weight near the bottom or back of the rocket at take-off due to the weight of the fuel. The directional thrust is powerful enough to overcome any instability. If the rocket motor shuts down for any reason though, the rocket will probably tumble if it does not have aerodynamic fins.
