Can you jump start a car with a spare battery?

I can't see why you couldn't right? If you have a perfectly good, fully charged battery in your garage, you could jump start a vehicle with it, right?
Thanks for all the great answers! I couldn't see why it wouldn't work. I should have added that this is a theoretical question, and that the battery would be a different size ie. one that wouldn't fit in the engine compartment of the dead vehicle. Thanks.

Two "ifs" here, the first if is whether the battery is fully charged, -- the second if, is whether you have booster cables heavy enough to carry the current! Guaranteed they are too small, -- IF-- you paid less than neighborhood of $100 for them! Now comes the "depends list"! A lot depends on how far down your vehicle battery is (towards totally dead)! If it has a a fair amount of power, - meaning it does crank - but too feeble to make engine take off, - than small booster cables may work ok! (I am talking about the wire inside - not the nice thick covering you see when looking at a set)!

Starters sometimes need as much as 350-450 amps of power to crank, -- "cheapie cables" usually have 8 gauge wire in them , - which means at about 100 amps, they start overheating, and after a few seconds of cranking they may start smoking! "00" gauge wire on other hand will carry 500 amps quite nicely! This is what the big diesel truckers use!

So you might better off putting the "good battery" in car, - starting, - and let run for a few minutes with "dead one" hooked up with booster cables -- so it will charge up a little, -- then put it back in car with boosters on and start!

Now about that battery in your garage, --- do not let it sit on conctrete or macadam floor very long, - there is some sort of electrloisis reaction that ruins a good battery in as little as a week sometimes! Put a piece of wood underneath it to separate from "hard floor". On metal workbench, - it does no harm,- but watch to make sure acid does not eat on metal there! Couple plastic bags put on bottom helps a lot here!
