Verizon phones don't use java. They use a propriitary platform called BREW and the only apps are available through Get it Now/Media Center. Due to the expenses involved in developing for BREW no apps are free. Verizon is famous for squeezing every penny they can from you. Their Blackberries and other smartphones are sometimes an exception.
