Can I get discharged from Navy boot camp for not knowing how to swim?
I'm planning on joining the Navy pretty soon (after summer), and I don't know how to swim. I have zero swimming experience. I can't even stay afloat.

"Should I take swimming classes before joining?" Yes.
Here's the deal. The Navy is a water-based branch of the military. They fly planes, but most of the guys and gals are aboard ship about half of their career. If something really bad happens aboard ship, everybody could get to swim home. Being able to swim isn't just a pleasant pastime... it's a survival skill. They'll teach you to improvise flotation devices with articles of clothing. They'll teach you how to put on a life jacket... probably even how to do so once you're in the water. These are things that most swimmers have never had to do. But, knowing the Navy is water-based... that probably you're going to spend some time aboard ship... it would seem prudent to get some swimming lessons. Most Recreation Department pools offer group lessons at a reasonable price. Or, you you're self conscious, you can pay a few bucks more and get private lessons. I watched one instructor take a kid (about ten years old) who was afraid of the water, and, in three lessons had him swimming the length of a pool. It wasn't pretty, it would never get him a spot on the Olympic Swimming Team... for any country... but the length was swum.
You'll need to know how to swim... I seem to recall it was about 50 meters... and to tread water for about five minutes or so. You'll also probably have to jump from a tower... either three meters (about ten feet) or ten meters (about 33 feet).
And, if it makes you feel any better, a lot of people find their "floating position" to be on the bottom. All it means is that you're going to have to work harder to stay on top than somebody who floats.
They have a bunch of stuff to teach you in Boot Camp. They'll give you extra help. But if you have the chance to learn to swim before hand, you can spend time on other studies.
